iOS 11 is finally here! Although we didn’t get the dark mode we all hoped for, we got other features which are definitely worth the update.
Let’s start with Messages, which has a redesigned interface and a redesigned App Drawer. Not just that, when you sign in with iCloud to a new device, all your messages get synchronised throughout all your devices!
For Apple Pay, you can now directly send and receive person-to-person payments directly from the Messages application!
Siri also gets an upgrade, in terms of features and voices. You have new voices, alongside a brand new interface. Not just that, you can now translate using Siri! Siri will now use on-device learning. It’ll basically better understand what you want. Syncs across all of a user’s Apple devices with end-to-end encryption.
In the Photos application, there is a new Depth API for developers, with new features for users on the iPhone 7 Plus in Portrait Mode with improved image quality. Live Photos is getting improvements. Memories can now identify photos and video of pets.
Now the biggest redesigned feature, Control Center and the Lockscreen. Control Center now packs everything into one single page, and makes use of 3D touch to view more toggles to control your device.
Lockscreen and Notifications are now also combined into one page! Swipe down after unlocking, takes you back to your lock screen and notifications. Pull down, and you can see all the other notifications!
In the iOS 11 Demo, we can see some new animations. Although this could just be a bug as it is a Beta 1. We’ll keep you updated with this specific feature. The Messages application has also been redesigned. We can also see that Apple has gone ahead to the regular Signal Bars that were present in previous iOS versions, instead of the round ones we have right now. (just a small tweak that makes a large visual difference)
Maps gets a huge new update: detailed floor plans for shopping malls in Boston, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, and several other major cities, with more to follow. You also get floor plans for airports. Apple Maps is getting lane guidance.
Do Not Disturb Driving allows you to not receive any notifications while driving. Extremely important for safety! Craig says “We think this is going to be a real important step for safety in the car.”
HomeKit can now control speakers! This will be controlled through AirPlay 2! There’s a “Shared Up Next” feature for AirPlay 2 where multiple users can create a playlist for a party.
MusicKit will be available as an API to developers, allowing developers access to the Apple Music application!
The biggest news for iOS 11 is the App Store. Developers can now release an app update in phases. This is the first redesign in 9 years! App Store is getting a new Today tab to discover apps and read stories about the developers who created them.
App Store also gets a dedicated Games tab. And you also get a dedicated tab for Applications that aren’t games. App Store has stories about developers, how-to guides, and themed cards such as App of the Day, Game of the Day, and The Daily List.
