Alright, so we’re waiting for Tim Cook to start the event off, stay tuned here for all the latest updates and announcements that are made today at the Worldwide Developer Conference of 2017!
While waiting, everyone has been told this event will be extremely long – over 2 hours long! We aren’t sure if thats true or not, but if it is – then there’s clearly some good stuff that Apple has to share with us! Stay tuned for the liveblog to start!
The event has begun.
Tim Cook – Welcome to WWDC! It’s great to be back in San Jose. The heart of Silicon Valley and right down the road from our headquarters in Cupertino. This is going to be the best WWDC ever!
Tim – We have a lot to talk about today! I am dispensing with the updates, other than to tell you, Apple is doing great! We have 6 new important updates!
Let’s start with tvOS! First announcement –
Amazon and Prime Video is coming to tvOS and all Apple TV’s later this year!
Second announcement –
Kevin Lynch is now on stage, to talk about the latest watchOS 4!
Let’s start with Watchfaces. The latest one being the Siri Watchface, as Siri is becoming the largest and most important assistant ever. The Siri Watchface will automatically show the most important information on your watch when you raise it to your face.
The next one is the Kaleidoscope effect, which gives a “very trippy effect”
Woody, Jessie and Buzz have made their way to the Apple Watch, alongside Minnie and Mickey!
So, three main new watch faces – Siri, Kaleidoscope and Toy Story.
The activity application has been updated, with new animations for achievements.
You can now use NFC and connect your Apple Watch to your Gym Equipment, allowing you to view your health information from the machine to your watch, and vice/versa.
Supported by all the largest gym equipment manufacturers.
Lynch – We’re redesigning the Music app on Apple Watch to make this a really great experience. Beautiful album art and playlist images. Support for multiple playlists.
Now we have Vera on stage for the demo.
watchOS 4 now has a Vertical Dock.
When you start a workout, music automatically starts playing that you like – with a simple swipe you can control the music in the workout application. There’s a lot more coming in watchOS 4, including a new Flashlight in Control Center.

Craig is now on stage to talk about Mac.
Please welcome the new macOS High Sierra. And it’s “baked” as he says. So let’s talk about the first new thing in High Sierra, Safari. The fastest web browser, on Mac and Windows compared to all the other popular web browsers!
The first new feature in Safari – Autoplay Blocking. This will allow you to always control the autoplay videos on videos, allowing you to manually play/pause the video if needed.
The next thing in High Sierra, Mail.
It’s far more efficient now, you have a split-view for the compose view, and uses spotlight for your searches.
The most important new feature is in Photos, in High Sierra. Alongside facial recognition, there is now a far more advanced editing software in Photos. Any edits you make in the Photos application, are directly synced to popular other photo editors such as Photoshop.
Craig – Mac file system has its roots in HFS from 30 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Our storage is a billion times larger. It’s time for a more modern file system. I’m pleased to announce we’re bringing the Apple File System (APFS) to macOS High Sierra as our new default file system on Mac.
Apple File System is going to be the new default for data structures in macOS!
Now, video. There’s a new standard for video, after 4K.
Now, lets return to Graphics. Craig announces Metal 2. This boasts new optimizations and APIs. Up to 10x better draw call throughput. Metal is also coming to VR! Steam VR SDK is coming to Mac!

So thats a quick look at macOS High Sierra! Now lets talk about the new Mac lineup!
New displays – 500 nits, 43% brighter, with one billion colours!
Better processor – Intel Kaby Lake processors with 10-bit HEVC decode. Up to 32GB RAM on 21.5-inch iMac. Up to 64GB on RAM on 27-inch iMac.
Fusion Drive standard on all 27-inch iMac configurations and high-end 21.5-inch iMac. Up to 50% faster SSDs with up to 2TB storage. 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports on the back.
Graphics is what we’re focusing on. So iMac graphics? Next-generation graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 (integrated). Up to 80% faster than previous generation.
Discrete graphics in 21.5-inch iMac include AMD Radeon Pro 555 & 560 GPUs with up to 4GB VRAM. Up to 3x faster than previous generation.
A VR Demo was given, and it looked amazing.
That’s that. Now lets look at the notebooks. Intel Kaby Lake processors coming to new 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro. Up to 50% faster SSDs. Faster standard graphics on new 15-inch MacBook Pro.
All these new updates ship today!
Now let’s have a look at something that won’t ship till the end of the year. The iMac Pro, in Space Grey! “This will be the most powerful Mac we’ve ever made.”
The iMac Pro will ship with an 8-core and a 10-core processor. But no, not just there. It goes up to 18-cores!
Radeon Vega graphics. Up to 16GB of VRAM. Up to 400 Gbps of memory bandwidth. Up to 11 Teraflops of single-precision computation. Up to 22 Teraflops of half-precision computation.
There’s so much to get into, but we don’t have time to do that.
So, how much is this going to burn your bank account? Well…

Now, lets talk about iOS!
Craig is back on stage to talk about iOS 11!
We have a lot to talk about, lets start with Messages!
When you sign in with iCloud to a new device, all your messages get synchronised throughout all your devices!
Now, Apple Pay! Person-to-person payments, you can send and receive money directly from Messages!
Now, Siri! New voices, and a brand new interface!
Siri can also now translate! Siri will now use on-device learning. It’ll basically better understand what you want. Syncs across all of a user’s Apple devices with end-to-end encryption.
New Depth API for developers. Portrait Mode gets new features.
Portrait mode is being updated with improved image quality, and developers will have access to a depth API.
Next, let’s talk about the biggest redesign – Control Center.
It packs everything into one single page!
Lockscreen and Notifications are now combined into one page! Swipe down after unlocking, takes you back to your lock screen and notifications. Pull down, and you can see all the other notifications!
Live Photos is getting improvements. Memories can now identify photos and video of pets.
In the iOS 11 Demo, we can see some new animations. Although this could just be a bug as it is a Beta 1. We’ll keep you updated with this specific feature. The Messages application has also been redesigned. We can also see that Apple has gone ahead to the regular Signal Bars that were present in previous iOS versions, instead of the round ones we have right now. (just a small tweak that makes a large visual difference)
Maps gets a huge new update: detailed floor plans for shopping malls in Boston, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, and several other major cities, with more to follow. You also get floor plans for airports. Apple Maps is getting lane guidance.
Do Not Disturb Driving allows you to not receive any notifications while driving. Extremely important for safety! Craig says “We think this is going to be a real important step for safety in the car.”
HomeKit can now control speakers! This will be controlled through AirPlay 2! There’s a “Shared Up Next” feature for AirPlay 2 where multiple users can create a playlist for a party.
MusicKit will be available as an API to developers, allowing developers access to the Apple Music application!
The biggest news for iOS 11 is the App Store. Phill Schiller is now on stage to share the news with us. Developers can now release an app update in phases.
A brand new App Store. The first redesign in 9 years! App Store is getting a new Today tab to discover apps and read stories about the developers who created them.
App Store also gets a dedicated Games tab. And you also get a dedicated tab for Applications that aren’t games. App Store has stories about developers, how-to guides, and themed cards such as App of the Day, Game of the Day, and The Daily List.
Monument Valley 2 is available today!
Craig Federighi is back on stage to discuss machine learning in iOS 11. Apple is releasing a new set of APIs to make it easier for developers to incorporate machine learning into their apps. Deep neural networks, support vector machines, and other models. On-device processing with data privacy across iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
ARKit is now available to all! (Augmented Reality)
So that’s iOS 11. Now back to Tim! On to the 5th announcement – iPad!
Jaws is on stage, talking about the new iPad Pro. You now have a 10.5-inch display, weighing in at 1-pound. You now have a full-screen keyboard.
New displays, the best displays ever made. True Tone display, wide color gamut, ultra-low reflectivity, up to 600 nits brightness, and HDR video. iPad Pro models getting maximum refresh rate of 120Hz, up from 60Hz. 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro getting A10X Fusion chip. It’s a six-core CPU with three high-performance cores and three high-efficiency cores.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro gets the same updates too. Apple Pencil now has industry-best 20ms latency. You also get over 40% better graphics performance.
Both 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro will start with 64GB of base storage. 10.5-inch iPad Pro will start at $649. 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at $799. 256GB and 512GB storage capacities available for both models.
All iPad’s now have a baseline storage of 64GB. You also get new accessories, a new case with support for a sleeve for the Apple Pencil. The iPad’s are available today and begin shipping next week!
This is the largest iOS release for iPad. Craig is back to talk about iOS 11. There is a new Dock, similar to that on the Mac – allowing you to fill it up with as many applications as you want.
You have a redesigned app-switcher, redesigned multi-function keyboard, drag-and-drop, and more!
You get a new application, similar to iFile (with those who are familiar to Jailbreaks) showing you all the files on your iPad, called Files. It looks like Finder on Mac.
This is the new App-Switcher for iPad. This is done by pulling up from the bottom of the display.
Now for the last announcement, HomePod.
Reinventing music for the house! HomePod has an A8 chip. 7 beam-forming tweeter array. Precision acoustic horns with directional control. Apple-designed woofer. It also uses Spatial Awareness!
HomePod will cost $349 and will be available in White and Space Grey!
